How To Survive a Home Remodeling Project
When it comes to home remodeling, renovation or additions, we truly understand that this process could become a huge inconvenience for you and your family. The fact is, once a remodeling project begins, it’s going to get a little inconvenient and dusty at times. However, by preparing yourself and your family well in advanced, you can minimize theses inevitable inconveniences, and survive your home remodeling with little to no delays.
How To Survive a Home Remodeling Project
Dust, Dust and More Dust
All construction undertakings create dust—, especially during demolition, carpentry and drywall work. However, you can limit the mess that gets into the part of the house you're living in by asking the contractor to build the addition before knocking down the existing exterior walls. That way the contractors can later seal off the portion of the house that's under construction with plywood, plastic, nd tape over all interior doorways and minimize the amount of dust and dirt inside of the house.
Lawn and Landscaping Damage
Often times it’s difficult to protect your lawn and landscaping if your remodeling project requires a new foundation or heavy machinery such as moving trucks and materials protect your landscaping when digging in the new foundation. However, it is always a good idea to ask the contractor prior to starting the project to transplant any favorite plants and to add new foundation planters, grass seeds, and topsoil at the project completion. It may add to the cost of your project but it's work that would eventually need to get done anyway.
Arrangement for Modern Technology
Did you know that the right time to install wiring for your home's technology is when walls are exposed in the middle of a construction project? Unfortunately, very few contractors are experts in any of these systems, and much of your home's technology, from HDMI cables for your television to Ethernet cables for your computer to hardwired smoke detectors and burglar alarms, is usually an afterthought for most. We recommend bringing in your own experts, from the local audiovisual shop, or your alarm company, to do that specialty wiring. Coordinate with your contractor when you are ready for that wiring so you don’t have additional project delays.
Project Costs Increasing
Practically every home remodeling project evolves as it progresses. And in almost every case, each one of these changes will add to your total cost. That is why it’s always advantageous to plan up to a 10 to 15 percent contingency in your budget to help accommodate any changes. It is also important that you always insist that any change of work be in presented in writing and have a fixed price that you need to sign off on before moving forward on any new work. This will help eliminates surprises later and help you keep track of your total costs.
Project Interruptions
Some of the most common causes for slowdowns during a home addition or remodeling project are out of the contractor's control. These reasons include bad weather and time-consuming changes made by the homeowner. Approximate start and completion dates are important to factor in and it ensures that everyone is clear about the other side's expectations.--A good thing to remember is that although home remodeling projects can be a bit stressful at times, it will be all worth the end result.
